Heading South

January 15th, 2013 · 1 Comment

Heading down to CA for a few days to visit Jewel’s family. While the kayak isn’t coming with me, I will be able to get out and do some fishing. I’ve gotten some crazy awesome reports from a local river and some good local knowledge on the area too. I’m more then excited.

Here’s what I’m looking to get myself into

mmm, yeah, i can handle that.

These big 5-10 rainbows, yes, rainbows, not steelhead, have been hitting on some tiny bugs. Fly sizes are ranging from 18-24. So I’ve tied up a bunch of nymphs (and a couple 22 BWO dries) to entice one or two of these to hit my rod too. Some of the stories I hear make it all sound easy–20+ fish days like this. Other people are telling me that it’s all dried out. In this case, I’m going with the optimists.

13 - 1

Here’s what I’ve been busy tying up this week. Everything on the left side I know will work, as well as the olive woolly buggers on the right. These all came as recommended patterns from guys that have been catching fish as shown above. The rest of the stuff on that side, though, are pretty much experimental stuff and otherwise excess. I know these fish aren’t likely going to hit a giant salmonfly that would normally be reserved for the hatch on the Deschutes, but it’s coming too. Same goes with the scuds, and all the glass bead bodied flies I made last year. Hey, never know….

I’ll be fishing alone, that’s probably the lame part.
Yes, Scout, I’m sorry, you’re not coming with me just yet.

I’m also pretty excited to try out a new fly line to hit the market. I’ll have more details later. It seems, so far, to be decent, but I’m going to reserve the rest of the information until I actually get to fish with it.
